The relation between the infrared H luminosities and the H I velocity widths of extragalactic objects is calibrated in order to serve as an additional distance scale for distant objects. Very large aperture observations of the H magnitudes (1.6 microns) of 12 nearby galaxies are presented, and corrected velocity widths and inclinations for the galaxies are obtained. The slope of the IR/H I relation is taken as -10, and its zero point is calibrated according to the Sandage-Tammann (1976) distances to M 31 and M 33. On the basis of this relation, distance moduli of 27.46 + or - 0.2, 27.76 + or - 0.2 and 29.16 + or - 0.35 magnitudes are obtained for the Sculptor, N 2403-M 81, and M 101 groups, respectively, and are found to be consistent with the relative distance scale of Sandage and Tammann out to the M 101 group. The agreement implies that the infrared Tully-Fisher relation (1977) is well defined with small scatter over most of the range in observable velocity widths, but does not provide stronger support for the absolute distance scale of Sandage and Tammann over that proposed by de Vaucouleurs (1979).
