The spectrum of the bright southern magnetic Ap star HR 5049 from 3300 A to 4800 A is dominated by strong lines of the singly ionized metals Ti II, Cr II, Fe II, and extraordinarily strong Co II. Both Si II and Sr II are rather weak, and rare earths are not definitely identified. The estimated stellar abundance of cobalt is of the order of 1000 times the solar value. Many strong unidentified lines may be Co II lines not yet observed in the laboratory. Previous classifications disagree with one another, which suggests the possibility of spectrum variability.
