We request 30hr at 3+6cm and 24hr at 1cm to study the formation of massive stars in the LMC. We will survey 40 young stellar objects (YSOs) in the LMC spanning evolutionary state, luminosity, and infrared-determined ionizing field strength. These observations will reveal how massive stars begin to form HII regions in the LMC, improving our understanding of massive star formation and feedback. Deep imaging will not only allow us to analyze very compact HII regions quenched by accretion (expected in the youngest massive YSOs), but also reveal the extended haloes that diagnose the clumpiness of the star forming material. We have used Spitzer photometry to select over 1000 YSOs in the LMC, and obtained mid-infrared spectra of over 300 of them. Prior to Spitzer, only entire massive star-forming regions could be selected, whereas now we can study individual young massive protostars, distinct from their many-parsec scale HII regions. Thus we not only can more reliably select individual YSOs but also target more embedded and less evolved sources. The proposed observations will provide a critical extinction-free analysis of the ionized gas in our multiwavelength census of LMC star formation.
