The physical arrangement and possible origin of the local supercluster are discussed. The supercluster consists of five major clouds containing 80 percent of the galaxies in the supercluster, and centering on the Virgo cluster. The two main theories of the origin of the supercluster are the gravitational clustering theory and the pancake theory. The former has the galaxies forming before the clusters and superclusters, the latter reverses the order. Intuition suggests that galaxies ought to condense first since they are denser than clusters, but the gravitational clustering theory has difficulties explaining the large-scale inhomogeneities in the universe. The pancake model assumes that clumping is caused by the gravity of a bath of low-energy neutrinos. If the rest mass of the neutrino is found to be finite, the pancake theory will be greatly strengthened.
