The specific cluster frequency in galaxies of type Sb is found to be an order of magnitude lower than that in ellipticals. This observation shows that typical E galaxies cannot have formed by mergers of spirals. Presently available observations suggest, but do not yet prove, that the spheroidal-bulge components of spiral galaxies have a lower specific globular-cluster frequency than do typical elliptical galaxies. Arguments are given which militate against the suggestion that spirals were formed from the merger of ancestral dwarf galaxies.
