The X-ray light curve of GX 301-2 is investigated, using Ariel 5 Sky Survey Instrument observations spanning 1300 days. The evidence indicates that GX 301-2 is a binary system with an orbital period of 41.4 days. The X-ray light curve is characterized by bright flares occurring just before periastron passage of the neutron star. The results of various simulations using an eccentric orbit model are shown, and it is concluded that simple eccentric orbit stellar wind models cannot reproduce in detail the observed X-ray behavior of the system.
