We present a new technique to invert galaxy counts in the infrared into an evolution of the total infrared luminosity function and cosmic star formation rate (SFR) history (from Le Borgne, Elbaz, Ocvirck & Pichon 2009). It is found that the SFR history followed a path parallel to the one of the history of accretion over the Hubble time. We then discuss a scenario for the coevolution of star formation and AGN activity based on the example of HE0450-2958 and more distant quasars (Elbaz 2009, in prep.). In this scenario, the formation of supermassive black holes (SMBH) happens prior to the main event of star formation in the host galaxy. The pre-existing AGN would then actively participate to the mass growth of its host galaxy, e.g. by jet-induced star formation.
