Meteor Showers, Leonids, Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, Meteor Storms, Historical: Leonid Meteors
Scientific paper
Historical records of 58 significant displays of the Leonid meteor shower, including 23 probable meteor storms, during the period AD 902-1969, are carefully re-examined. Dates and times of shower maxima are re-determined and displays classified as either outstanding showers or meteor storms. Errors and omissions in previously published summaries are identified. The present studies have led to a new assessment of the dust distribution around the parent of the Leonid stream, Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. Of the 58 Leonid displays researched, 27 of the 35 outstanding showers and all 23 meteor storms, have occurred between 750 days before and 1750 days after the parent comet's passage through the descending node, with the Earth closer than 0.012 AU inside or 0.018 AU outside the comet's orbit. The likely activity and observational circumstances for Leonid displays from 1995 to 2002 are assessed. A Leonid meteor storm is most likely, but by no means certain, in November 1999, with probable noteworthy showers in 1997, 1998 and 2000. Significant Leonid activity during the period 2029=962033 is unlikely.
