The internal gravity waves generated by the fall of the Skylab space station near Perth, Australia on July 11, 1979, which deposited 10 to the 19th to 10 to the 20th ergs of energy into the atmosphere in the course of a few minutes, are investigated as an example of an ionospheric effect with known source parameters. Measurements of the deviation from the mean critical frequency and effective height of the F2 region made by an ionospheric network north and northwest of the explosion show a decrease in critical frequency deviation and an increase in effective height at various times after the explosion. The propagation velocity of the disturbance is estimated at 800-1000 m/sec with a linear increase of the quasi-period from the point of the explosion. Electron density profiles at the time of passage of the disturbance show a maximum increase of about 250,000/cu cm in density and 40-50 km in height, while the maximum layer thickness did not change. Calculations of the oscillation of F2 region height due to an impulsive point heat source in an isothermal plane-parallel atmosphere agree with the measured wave characteristics.
