The characteristics of the 22-year modulation of the geomagnetic field disturbance level by the solar magnetic cycle are examined. Comparison of the relative values of various solar activity indices during the three years surrounding the solar activity minima for odd and even 11-year sunspot cycles indicates the activity of the transient geomagnetic field to be less at the minima of even cycles than in odd cycles, although the number of large and very large magnetic storms and isolated disturbances is greater. Analysis of frequency distributions of Kp index values for odd and even cycles at various stages reveals that the heliomagnetic cycle may be divided into two components, corresponding to moderate and (very) large geomagnetic disturbances. Moderate disturbances are most often observed at the minimum, growth phase and maximum of odd sunspot cycles and at the decay phase of even cycles, and are determined by periodic changes in the solar quasi-dipole field. Large and very large disturbances appear most often at the minimum and growth phase of an even cycle and at the trailing edge of odd cycles.
