It is suggested that the shock waves in hypersonic optically thin quasar winds are bow shocks produced by obstacles in the wind, e.g., supernovae. These waves produce post shock regions where strong Compton cooling occurs, characterized by broad emission line regions. Since the gas behind a bow shock retains a substantial fraction of the inflow velocity, there is no need to invoke a cloud acceleration process. The cooled gas forms numerous small optically thick condensations as a result of thermal instability. A supernova rate of 0.1 to 10/yr can provide the large number of clouds which must exist.
