The icy comet hypothesis is reviewed and sublimating icy models are discussed. The heliocentric dependence of OH band intensities in comet Bradfield (1979 X) in the near UV is significantly steeper than expected for H2O ice over 0.7 to 1.4 AU. Sublimating icy comets give an index n 2.2 in the dependence r to the minus n power, where r = heliocentric distance. The H 1216A and O 1304A heliocentric variations in comet Bradfield give uncertain indications, while the observed (O) 2972A emission at 0.7 AU can be explained by CO2 photodissociation. The index n = 3.5 to 4, therefore, implies less volatile outgassing material than H2O, primarily of organic composition.
