Line profiles that are produced in a spherically symmetrical expanding envelope were calculated. The model assumes that the envelope surrounds a stationary core that emits continuum radiation. Mass ejection rate is constant, with density variation determined by the equation of continuity and a velocity law. Statistical equilibrium in atomic level populations, governed by radiative and thermal collisional processes, is also assumed. Comparison of model results with IUE spectra of Beta Lyrae indicates that the mass loss rate = 0.000003 M/yr.
