Observations of the Be X-ray source A 0535 + 26 are described. The features of the source changed notably between Feb. and Oct. 1981: the magnitude of the optical companion decreased by 0.2 M in less than one year, in passbands U, B. and V. The infrared magnitude decreased by 0.6 M in the K band and the ultraviolet flux is nearly invariable. The variations in different wavelength regions are probably due to changes in the circumstellar envelope. November 1981 high resolution IUE spectra clearly show C IV and Si IV lines with P Cygni profiles. February and October 1980 profiles did not show this characteristic (due to intrinsic variability of the source and/or a consequence of the smaller S/N ratio of the spectra). From the Si IV and C IV P Cygni profiles, a mass loss rate of 6 X 10 to the minus 9th to 10 to the minus 8th power M/yr is estimated. From the infrared excess, a mass loss rate of 6 x 10 to the minus 6th power M/yr is obtained. Radio observations at 18 cm give an upper limit of 36 mJy from A 0535+26.
