The UV observations of the giant planets, their satellites, and asteroids, performed before IUE, by IUE, and by the Voyager 1 and 2 UV spectrometers are compared. The improved spectral resolution of IUE, relative to previous UV observations, made possible the observation of NH3 on Jupiter and C2H2 on Jupiter and Saturn. Due to both its spatial and spectral resolutions, IUE provided a valuable contribution to the Voyager UV results especially in the Ly alpha emission and for the study of Io and Europa. The IUE provided the first detailed UV data on asteroids.
