Comets are objects of considerable fascination. This paper reviews
current knowledge of the physical structure of the cometary nucleus,
coma and tail, the orbits of comets in the solar system, the proposed
mechanisms of cometary origin, the decay processes suffered by comets,
and the ways in which they can be observed from earth and by spacecraft.
