We describe the first part of a survey for lensed quasars. The first sample includes 142 images of 121 quasars. All images are analyzed using empirical point-spread functions and Monte Carlo simulations of the observations. We use Monte Carlo simulations to study the expected distribution of the properties of single stellar images, image pairs, symmetric image quads, known gravitational lenses, and statistical samples from the best-fitting statistical lens models. The Monte Carlo simulations reproduce the essential features of the observational data. We accidentally rediscovered the lensed pair LBQS 1009-0252; we found two strong lens candidates Q0010+023 and Q0011-002 that turned out to be low-redshift galaxies, one weaker candidate Q0456+025 that is probably a false positive, and one false positive Q0847+100; and we had two cosmic-ray hits on the quasar image, Q1318-050 and Q1038+311. With our candidate selection criteria we expect to find three statistical false positives in our sample based on the Monte Carlo simulations. Other than these seven objects we found five images within 6".0 of the quasars, and we have identified two as a stars and one as the lower redshift quasar in LBQS 1009-0252. We found a total of 22 objects within 12".0 of the quasars, seven of which are brighter than the quasar. Of these 22, we have identified eight as stars and one as a quasar. The spatial and magnitude distributions of these objects match the predicted distribution of stars and galaxies. Depending on the cosmological model and the mass normalization for E/S0 galaxies, we expected to find between 0.8 and 2.5 lenses in this sample.
