We use Monte Carlo simulations to examine the effects of Doppler beaming on flux-limited samples of compact radio sources representative of relativistic jets found in active galactic nuclei (AGN). The canonical jets in our model have intrinsic (unbeamed) synchrotron luminosities L = Gamma (xi ) l, where the bulk Lorentz factors (Gamma ) of the parent population are distributed according to a power law. Such a relation between the intrinsic synchrotron luminosity and Gamma (with xi < 0) is predicted by relativistic jet models based on hydrodynamics such as that of Blandford & Rees (1974; MNRAS, 169, 395). Studies of Doppler beaming to date have considered only the case where xi = 0 and have not included an intrinsic luminosity function for the parent population. We discuss and compare the predicted apparent velocity, redshift, and flux density distributions of the xi = 0 and xi < 0 models to the combined Pearson & Readhead/Caltech-Jodrell (PR/CJ) survey (Vermeulen 1995, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., 92, 11385) of flat-spectrum AGN selected on the basis of 5 GHz flux density. We also examine the effects of the xi parameter and intrinsic Lorentz factor distribution on the viewing angles, Doppler factors, and other observable properties of flux-limited samples of compact radio sources.
