A deep photograph of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946 was taken 49 days before maximum light of the galaxy's recent Type II supernova explosion. Since there is no detectable image at the position of the supernova, an upper limit can be placed on the mass of the stellar progenitor. Although the mass estimate is somewhat uncertain due to the lack of a faint stellar sequence, the progenitor was probably less than approximately 18 solar masses.
