Observations of the infrared hydrogen Brackett lines have revealed that many protostellar objects show a significant excess of line flux over the flux expected from an H II region around a ZAMS star of the same luminosity. The line excess appears to be confined to objects with luminosities less than 100,000 solar luminosities. The observations which lead to these conclusions are presented and evaluated. Three possible mechanisms for the excess line flux are discussed: excess UV radiation due to the accretion of natal material onto the star, extended atmospheres due to stellar winds, and deviations from the Menzel case B recombination line strengths due to high density and optical depth in the H II region.
