Theoretical predictions on the anisotropy of the cosmic background radiation provided by cosmological models with long-wavelength density perturbations are investigated. The perturbative modes of the linearized theory of Lifshitz and Khalatnikov (1963) are considered and each mode is shown to give rise to a corresponding multipole in a spherical-harmonic expansion of the anisotropy pattern. Amplitudes for the anisotropy multipoles up to l equals 7 are calculated for normalized amplitudes of the corresponding multipoles in the density wave. A negative curvature of space is shown to have an unexpected bearing on higher l multipoles. It is found that in open spaces the background anisotropy is dominated by higher l multipoles in the limit of large perturbation wavelengths. Dipole and quadrupole anisotropies of comparable amplitudes arise naturally from perturbations with a size on the order of the particle horizon.
