Scientific paper

A method for the calculation of radiative transfer in overlapping resonance line doublets is proposed. The behaviour of source function, profile shape and equivalent width with changing separation is investigated. It is found that the doublet source function can be approximated by the source function of the 'contracted line', i.e. the line constituted by the two components together at zero separation. The profile shape can be approximated by that of the 'contracted line' when the final velocity is larger than the Doppler velocity by about two orders of magnitude or more. The model can easily be extended to more-component systems.
