Central momenta up to the fourth order and their variances for different samples of the 'Catalogue of Nearby Stars' (Gliese, 1969) and for the selection of '512 FK 4/FK 4 Suppl. Distant Stars' (Fricke, 1977) have been calculated. The method employed is quite different from the one used by Erickson (1975), and his results are confirmed. Differences between the results and the values in Gliese and Fricke are interpreted through the kinematic-age relation. Wide deviations from the normal law are found for the residual velocity distribution of nearby stars, and important variations in the vertex deviation arise for different samples.
