Observational data on the anisotropy of the cosmic background radiation are summarized, and the astrophysical and cosmological implications are discussed. The data are presented in false-color images and graphs, and the problems involved in obtaining accurate measurements and correcting for local effects and the dipole anisotropy due to the motion of the Galaxy are discussed. Consideration is given to inflationary cosmological models explaining the temperature homogeneity of the universe, the formation of clusters and superclusters of galaxies, and the role of adiabatic disturbances in causing density variations in the early universe.
