The author calculates the rate of energy transfer by energetic electrons and protons to the gas in the inner haloes of M87 and the Coma cluster. If the energetic proton-to-electron ratio is comparable to its galactic value, proton energy deposition is important in affecting the thermal state of the gas. In these environments, the author argues, the plasma is not anomalously resistive to the motion of energetic particles and hence the particles are essentially Coulomb-coupled to the plasma.
