The space-time distribution of equivalent ionospheric currents in the southern polar cap is constructed along with the distribution of field-aligned currents for the case of quasi-stationary convection, where the southward component of the IMF stays at a level of about -5 nTl for several days. 'Scanning' of the southern polar cap by meridional stations led to the detection of a new current system in the polar region with plasma convection to the dayside in the case of a southward IMF. It is concluded that, under these conditions, an electric field exists from evening to morning in the polar cap.
