Spectral types and radial velocities are determined for eight superluminous giant (SLG) candidate stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 1866. Four of the stars are shown to be likely cluster members. No evidence is found to support the idea the SLGs are binaries or blurred images of more than one star. It is suggested the SLGs may have been formed in a second period of star formation triggered when NGC 1866 passed through the LMC's plane for the first time.
