A strong maser line (≈75 Jy) has been observed in the C-rich circumstellar envelope CIT 6 at the frequency of the (0,2°,0) J = 1-0 line of HCN (energy 2050K above the ground state). This is the first strong maser ever observed in a C-rich circumstellar envelope. The line is particularly narrow (FWHM ≈ 1.0 km s-1). Its intensity is comparable to, albeit weaker than SiO masers. Its existence in CIT 6 could be related to the particular activity and structure in the vicinity of the photosphere.
