The authors have checked whether a simple photometric model can explain the far-infrared and optical properties of both normal and starburst galaxies. With the IMF proposed by Kennicutt (1983) and a larger absorption for stars more massive than 20 M_sun;, the far-infrared activity, infrared excess, UBV colors and Hα equivalent width of normal spirals are well reproduced. The authors have then studied how these photometric quantities are affected by a burst of given strength b and internal extinction Eb(B-V). Diagrams of LIR/LB, (U-B) and Hα equivalent width vs. (B-V) have been obtained which allow to estimate b and Eb(B-V) in a sample of starburst, blue compact and interacting galaxies.
