We have obtained CCD photometry of two overlapping fields in the open cluster M 34. We find that two early-F stars previously suspected to be variable are Gamma Doradus-type candidates. Hence, Gamma Dor stars apparently do exist in clusters as old as 250 Myr. We also discovered eight low-amplitude variable stars with spectral types ranging from F8V to K0V. These are presumably spotted, rotating stars. One of the important questions relating to Gamma Doradus stars is whether the non-radial gravity-mode pulsations of these stars only occur in stars of a particular age range. The young cluster NGC 2516 (age approx 100 Myr) contains eight Gamma Dor candidates (Zerbi et al. 1998), while the much older Hyades cluster (approx 600 Myr) appears not to contain any such variables (Krisciunas et al. 1995). In this brief note we describe some tentative results from CCD photometry of the intermediate age (approx. 250 Myr) cluster M 34. Previous scanty photometry by Krisciunas & Crowe (1996) indicated that six of the early-F stars in M 34 showed variations over the course of a single night, or night-to-night variations. We have obtained new data for four of these six stars and 89 others, which we are in the process of analyzing. A full paper will be published in a refereed journal later.
