THE silver/silver chloride electrode has been preferred to the calomel electrode for precise potentiometric work, and E0 for the cell H2, | Pt | HCl(aq.) | Hg2Cl2 | Hg has not been directly determined with any degree of accuracy. Nevertheless, mercury suffers from none of the difficulties associated with purity and thermal or mechanical history which affect silver and other hard metals. Attempts have been made to remedy the defects of the calomel electrode in order to make use of this advantage, and have been so far successful as to warrant a preliminary report.
