We discuss ways in which well-known hybrid simulation methods can be extended to address ongoing issues related to the structure and properties of collisionless shocks. Focusing primarily on slow-mode shocks, we discuss how the basic physics model for the electrons can be enhanced and how kinetic models can be embedded in more global calculations.
