With the wide use of modern computing to generate vast amounts of atomic and molecular data, it is particularly important that there be experimental benchmarks to which computed data may be compared. Benchmark experiments also serve the purpose of anchoring other experiments, and revealing new and unanticipated phenomena is a further benefit of such experiments. In this paper we mention and/or illustrate a few examples of benchmarks in the area of electron scattering which serve each of these purposes-and sometimes combinations of them. Careless presentation of uncertainties and mindless or offhand interpretations of quoted uncertainties are a problem in communication of experimental data and the manner in which they relate to computed data and other experimental results.
