Aspects of compact (less than or = 0.001 arcsec) optical and radio emission of active galactic nuclei and quasars relevant to interferometric observations in both spectral regimes are reviewed. A goal for joint observations is the investigation of broad line regions, their possible connection with nuclear radio sources, and the role of collimated outflow (jets) in these processes. Candidates for joint radio and optical observations, and pilot observations with optical interferometry are discussed.
