The paper describes the evidence for the existence of a black hole in the center of the X-ray source Cygnus X-1 through observations made at the wavelengths of light, radio waves and X rays. Important properties which may be deduced from a black hole's mass and rotation parameter are described. A workable description of the structure of the inner disk of Cygnus X-1 is set up. A description of black holes created by the collapse of normal stars ranging in mass from three to sixty times the mass of the sun and the evidence for the existence of supermassive holes and miniholes is included.
