We propose to observe the X-ray binary 4U 1636-536 to determine whether it exhibits transient jet formation. Recently, a 46 day super-orbital periodic modulation appeared in the X-ray flux, in conjunction with a decrease in the X-ray luminosity and the appearance of a hard tail in the X-ray spectrum. Similar transitions to the low/hard state in other X-ray binaries have been linked to the onset of relativistic jets. We have interpreted an observed phase shift between the modulation in the low and high energy X-ray bands as indicating that transient jets form over this 46 d timescale. A number of radio observations of 4U 1636-536 have found no significant radio emission. However, during each of these prior observations the source was in the high/soft state, when we do not expect jets to form. We therefore propose a series of triggered ATCA observations of 4U 1636-536 to revisit the possibility that transient relativistic jets are forming during the transition to the low/hard state, with associated synchrotron emission at radio wavelengths.
