The design of microwave filters using dual-mode technology is analyzed. A side-wall coupled approach, in which a pair of dual-TE111 mode cavities are coupled in such a way as to allow tunability from one end of the structure, is shown to be superior to end-coupled structures. Data on filters constructed using the side-wall coupled dual-mode technique shows that good performance is achieved by such a device having small volume and synchronously adjusted tuning screws.
