With the SKA and ALMA in development, science-case studies of the cold ISM in galaxies up to z~3 are highly desired. We propose to use powerful radio galaxies to study the cold molecular and neutral gas properties of samples of the most active galaxies from the nearby Universe out to these high redshifts. This ATCA proposal is aimed at studying CO for a specific sample of radio galaxies at z~2.5-3, which are known to contain giant Ly-alpha halos and high star formation rates. Results from this high-redshift study will be compared with detailed studies of the cold gas in nearby radio galaxies that contain giant disks of neutral hydrogen (HI) gas. Our project will therefore map the properties of the cold gas at high-z with current-day radio telescopes in some of the most promising candidate systems as well as trace the evolutionary history of radio galaxies by studying their cold gas content from high-z to the nearby Universe.
