A cylinder of electrically conducting fluid is placed in an axial magnetic field including a steady component and an unsteady one. The theory reveals the existence of a radial motion and of resonant frequencies. A theoretical and experimental study is made in the case of mercury. The experimental results accord reasonably well with the theory. This rather simple system opens new possibilities for generating vibrations without electrode or emitter within the fluid.
