Research in solar physics and solar control of the ionosphere made possible by observations conducted in rockets and satellites is discussed. The major features of the electromagnetic inputs to and the interactions with the ionosphere are investigated. Studies using a high resolution over the full electromagnetic range reveal a solar spectrum. The spatial structure of the active regions over the solar disk and in higher levels of the corona is observed from spectroheliograms in all wavelengths.
