The production rate of OH radicals and the lifetime of the OH radical in the comet Kohoutek were derived from monochromatic photographs of the comet taken on January 15, 1974, when it was 0.62 AU from the sun. A model of the cometary coma is proposed to explain the observed 8 km/sec velocity of H atoms at large distances from the comet's nucleus. Within a sphere of radius 30,000-40,000 km, H2O is dissociated into H (with velocity of 19 km/sec) and OH. The majority of these H atoms are thermalized. In a second zone, at a radial distance of 40,000-100,000 km, the H atoms are produced by photodissociation of OH and have a velocity of 4-10 km/sec.
