Models are calculated for the structure and chemical composition of the mantles and cores of Jupiter and Saturn. Basic hydrogen-helium models of the mantle are considered which consist of an outer layer containing molecular hydrogen and an inner layer of metallic hydrogen. Variations in the basic models are shown to be due to differences in the metallic hydrogen content and the adiabatics of molecular hydrogen. Other abundant mantle materials are placed in three groups (gas, ice, and heavy-element components), and theoretical abundances are calculated for mantles which include only the gas component and those which also include various mixtures of the ice and heavy-element components. Four models are proposed for the cores, and calculations are made of the relative radii and masses of the cores and the pressures at the core boundaries and in the centers of the planets. Overall temperatures, pressures, densities, and relative masses are calculated at the levels of protoplanetary cloud formation and hydrogen metallization.
