It is shown that under certain conditions, magnetosonic waves can be responsible for the various forms in the grand design of galaxies. The dispersion properties of such waves in a differentially rotating medium are investigated along with the geometry of the wavefronts. A model of the basic state of a two-dimensional subsystem is used where an infinitely thin gas disk with a certain surface density and an axisymmetric magnetic field is rotating differentially with a certain angular velocity. Analytic equations are derived, and it is suggested that the dispersion mode excited in a magnetized gas disk may account for the formation of Segner wheel-type galactic structures. It is shown that the length of the bar and the span of the spiral arms are determined by the character of the rotation curve and that the bar must be short and the arms long in galaxies with rotation curves analogous to ours.
