A theoretical study is made of the possible mechanisms responsible for the ejection of planetary nebulae. An explanation is presented in which the progenitor of a planetary nebula becomes degenerate almost up to the surface before it ejects its hydrogen-rich outer shell. The energy needed to eject the nebula is supplied by partial hydrogen burning in the outflowing envelope. A two-parameter set of time-independent models representing mass-ejecting stars is found.
