The energy curves of stars can be transformed into a form which is insensitive to interstellar reddening by computing the reddening-free quantities Q. Families of mean standard Q-curves can be computed for stars of different spectral types, luminosities, chemical compositions, and peculiarities. They can then be used to classify stars of unknown types and interstellar reddenings by simple shifting their Q-curves so as to find the best fit with one of the standard curves. The same method can be applied to multicolor photometric observations. The potential of the method is illustrated by computing Q-curves for the seven-color Vilnius photometric system. The Q-curves are a very valuable way of recognizing reddened stars having different spectral peculiarities.
