The German X-ray astronomy satellite ROSAT, launched on June 1, 1990, yielded during its first half-year all-sky survey an increase of X-ray sources from 840 to 60,000 and of EUV sources from 12 to 384. The X-ray survey also revealed the large-scale structure of the sky associated with the distribution of hot and cool gas in the galaxy. About 100 SNRs were found to be X-ray emitters, while only 50 of these were previously known. Exciting results were also obtained concerning such nearby galaxies as Andromeda, with 407 sources.
