In contrast to the Earth, the formation of the Moon's core might have taken place some Ma after its origin. Palaeointensity data concerning the ancient lunar magnetic field, the centre of gravitycentre of figure offset, the occurrence of successive reorientations of the Moon relative to its axis of rotation in space and palaeogravity surfaces all are compatible with a core forming about 4.1 Ga ago. An absence of a core at the origin of the Moon is a very significant boundary condition for theories of the Moon's origin.
