An observation of the X-ray luminous cluster or galaxies Abell 478 made with the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter on ROSAT is reported. The result of White et al. (1991) and Johnstone et al. (1992) that the X-ray emission from the central regions of Abell 478 is absorbed by a column density in excess of the Galactic value obtained from 21-cm H I observations is confirmed. It is demonstrated that the excess absorption is concentrated within the inner 300 kpc of the cluster and so must be intrinsic to it. Measurements of the radial variation of the temperature within the cluster are reported. At large radii, the temperature of the intracluster gas is consistent with the average value of about 6.6 keV measured over the whole cluster by Ginga. A spectral analysis of the central 300 kpc of the cluster also demonstrates the presence of material significantly cooler than the ambient intracluster gas, which is well modeled by a cooling flow with a mass deposition rate consistent with the deprojection result.
