Long-slit spectra have been obtained of the compact elliptical galaxies NGC 4478, NGC 4486 B, and NGC 5846A. The data are used to investigate the radial behavior of various absorption features in these galaxies and, whereas systematic radial trends appear to be absent in NGC 5846A, systematic gradients have been detected in NGC 4478 and NGC 4486B. The Mg2 index in NGC 4478 changes with radius at a rate which is not markedly different from what is seen in more luminous elliptical galaxies. A steeper Mg2 gradient may be present in NGC 4486B, although the uncertainty in the results for this galaxy are large. Nevertheless, if interpreted in terms of a radial variation in chemical composition, these data suggest that the metallicity gradients in NGC 4478 and NGC 4486B are at least as steep as those in more luminous elliptical galaxies. It is also shown that the manner in which the various indices change with respect to Mg2 in the outer regions of NGC 4478 is qualitatively similar to what is seen in other elliptical galaxies.
