Open Clusters And Associations: Individual: Hyades, Stars: Abundances

Scientific paper

Two superclusters in star stream I (the Hyades stream) are isolated from the objects in the FK5 and FK5 extension and the Gliese catalogue of nearby stars, with the space motions in the ratio of VTOT (Hyades)/VTOT(NGC 1901)=1.5. The two superclusters have the same heavy element abundance and about the same mean age and age spread, although the Hyades supercluster may have a few older (2×109) stars and the NGC 1901 supercluster, a few more blue stragglers. Six percent of the catalogue stars are members of the stream and 38% of the stream stars belong to the two superclusters. Assuming that the FK5 catalogues are not biased as to the proper motion size, the Gliese catalogue of nearby stars may contain only about half the stars within some 20 pc of the sun.
